Brookfield Krebs Unit Viscometer Model KU-3KU-3 Viscometer
The KU-3 Viscometer displays, Krebs units, gram units and centipoise for paints, coatings and inks.
Brookfield offers a completely digital calculating Krebs Unit Instrument with all the reliability you'd expect in Brookfield instrumentation...now with relative centipoise display.
Why the KU-3? This instrument is used widely for making viscosity measurements on paints/coatings in accordance with ASTM D562.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Continuous sensing and display in Krebs units, grams, and centipoise.
Magnetic spindle coupling.
Allows rapid sample measurement to determine required consistency.
LED Digital Display of: Krebs Units (increased resolution in 0.1 KU increments), Grams (in 1 gm increments) and Centipoise (cP).
Expanded measurement range (40 to 141 KU; 32 to 1099 g; 27 to 5274 cP).
Accuracy to ±1% of full scale range.
Reproducibility to ±0.5% of full scale range.
Easy to use; no weights; simplifies an established test procedure.
Compatible with industry specification (ASTM D562).
Base accommodates standard pint, ½ pint, and quart cans.
The optional paste spindle is suitable for use with high consistency materials such as roller mill pastes.
NIST traceable viscosity standards available.

How it Works
Samples are tested in standard paint industry cans held by a fixture located on the viscometer base. The can is filled to within 3/4" (20mm) of the top. The KU-3 operating lever has two positions:
Up: Spindle stationary, drive motor off
Down: Spindle rotating; sample being measured
The displayed reading can be held by depressing the HOLD switch at any time. With the viscometer in the HOLD configuration, the display may be switched to compare the Krebs unit (KU) reading with the associated gram (gm) reading, and centipoise. Brookfield Oil Viscosity Standards in Krebs units are NIST traceable and are recommended for verifying calibration of the KU-3 Viscometer.
More Information
Annual Calibration Service is Recommended
- We recommend that this instrument be returned on an annual basis. Having this annual maintenance done will ensure the instrument's long life and optimal performance.
The air-purge option is not available in the Model KU-3.
Please note:
The cP reading from the KU-3 will not necessarily agree with cP values
measured with other instrumentation due to:
Unique shear rate of the KU-3 paddle spindle.
Uniqueness of the Krebs unit scale. (The centipoise value should not be used for purposes of calibration.)
Use only Brookfield KU mineral oils for calibration check.
The cP readings will only be valid when using the paddle spindle.
The paste spindle may not be used to determine cP.
Conversion Between Stormer Viscometer Krebs Units and Viscosity Cup Drain Time
The three reduced size charts, at left. are only for illustrating this conversion method. Ask for complimentary full size (8-1/2" x 11") Krebs Units Conversion Charts and latest Krebs Stormer literature.
Three Step Conversion Procedure
Step 1:
Knowing the Krebs value, convert this value to Centipoise viscosity. On the attached Krebs Units to Centipoise conversion chart, read vertically from the known Krebs unit to the curve and then horizontally to the left to the Centipoise value. Record this value.
Step 2:
Convert the Centipoise value for the test material in question to Centistokes. On the attached Centipoise - Centistoke conversion chart, locate the Centipoise value from Step 1 on the vertical scale.Read horizontally to the right from this value to the Weight Per Gallon or Specific Gravity line, estimating values between lines, applicable to the test material in question. From this intersection read directly downward to the horizontal Centistoke scale and record this value.
Step 3:
Determine the drain time in seconds for the viscosity cup in question from the Centistoke value from Step 2. For this conversion, refer to the Gardco Viscosity Cup Equivalent Chart or the conversion chart furnished with each Gardco produced viscosity cup. Only viscosity cups accommodating the highest range of viscosity are satisfactory for this conversion as most Krebs measurements are in the range from 500 to 1400 Centistokes.
For satisfactory results, do no use a viscosity cup above its recommended top limit. This conversion is accurate only for Newtonian or near Newtonian materials. Viscosity of materials that deviate greatly from these true liquids may not be “seen” the same by the Stormer and viscosity cup methods of measurement.
Please refer to the appropriate cup conversion chart. If you do not have one please contact us at 1-800-762-2478 or 954-946-9454.

KU-3 Spindles
The KU-3 Viscometer can be used with two different spindles.
The "standard" Krebs spindle is ideal for most paint and coatings operation, while the optional Paste spindle is designed for high viscosity materials such as roller mill pastes.
Krebs Viscometer Oil Fluids
Krebs Oil Fluids are for use with the Brookfield KU series Viscometers. Like all Brookfield Viscosity Standards, the Krebs Oil Fluids are accurate to ±1%.
Krebs Oil Fluids are for use with the KU series Viscometers. Like all Brookfield Viscosity Standards, the Krebs Oil Fluids are accurate to ±1% of stated viscosity values. Krebs Oil Fluids are supplied in 1/2 liter (1 pint) containers complete with certificate of calibration.

ABOUT REACH COMPLIANCY
REACH is the European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The law entered into force on 1 June 2007.
The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. At the same time, REACH aims to enhance innovation and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.
